France's presidential election will be held on April 18 (first round) and May 2, 2027 (second round), according to Le Monde.
The newspaper, citing a source in the French executive branch, said authorities chose this schedule over an alternative plan that would have set voting for April 11 and 25.
Under Article 7 of the French Constitution, the election of the new president must be held no fewer than 20 days and no more than 35 days before the expiry of the incumbent president"s term.
President Emmanuel Macron began his second five-year term on May 14, 2022, meaning his mandate will expire on May 13, 2027. He is not eligible to run for a third consecutive term under the constitution.
